New Experiment Shows How WIPP Barrel Event Likely Happened

SimplyInfo.org member Gasbuggy (Vernon Brechin) conducted an experiment related to the event in WIPP. As has been widely reported, the barrel that had an event or explosion was admitted to have organic wheat based cat litter along with nitrate salts in the liquid wastes being disposed of in WIPP We did a previous less detailed experiment with this wheat based cat litter that can be found here. This new experiment by Gasbuggy compares a clay litter (as had been used previously by Los Alamos) and the new wheat based cat litter used on the suspect barrels. The litter absorbents are used to soak up a nitrate salt solution then dried. The resulting experiment clearly shows the drastic difference between the two litters and exactly how reactive the wheat based litter is … Read entire article »

NHK Admits Fukushima Daiichi Ejected Fuel After Multiple Studies Document It

A rough translation of the NHK article tells something almost unbelievable to see admitted by the state news agency. “It is a result, in addition to the radioactive cesium, zirconium material of the fuel rods and uranium, and iron of the material of the pressure vessel, material that matches the structure of the nuclear reactor and nuclear fuel has been detected.” NHK has been one of the less critical news sources in Japan, frequently downplaying or omitting … Read entire article »

TEPCO Admits Unit 3 Had Total Melt Through

TEPCO Admits Unit 3 Had Total Melt Through

TEPCO has admitted that the fuel at unit 3 had a complete melt through. This is where 100% of the fuel melts and drops into the containment vessel. TEPCO previously estimated 60% of the fuel melted through. They now claim that the HPCI (cooling system) ceased working at 5:30 am March 13, 5 hours earlier than the previous estimate. This was 26 hours before the massive hydrogen and steam explosion at unit 3. This piece of … Read entire article »

Fukushima Corium Experiment Creates Unexpected Result

Fukushima Corium Experiment Creates Unexpected Result

As part of an ongoing series of corium experiments our research team has been doing, the newest experiment created a quite unusual result. The newest experiment, the fifth in a series conducted by Edano, took the top range of assumed melt mass and ran the experiment with a sustained high heat. Upon completion it was noticed that a modest amount of the lead had left the pedestal but what was in the pedestal was much … Read entire article »

Corium Experiments; Pedestal Behaviors Using Lead Part II

Following the initial published findings of our corium experiments in lead, an additional run was done. Read about the initial lead experiment here and the corium experiments in glass here. This follow up run of the lead experiment was done using the same process as the initial one but included a new “floor”. The new lead volume was 250g. Of that about 150g fell through to the “floor” (about 60%).  A different material was used as the containment floor. On the previous experiment it was noticed that the ceramic saucer used as a floor had adhered to the lead and appeared to have acted as a heat sink. In this version a steel food container lid was used to determine if the lead would behave differently without the ceramic heat sink … Read entire article »

WIPP Cat Litter Acts As Fuel To Ignition Or Reaction

WIPP Cat Litter Acts As Fuel To Ignition Or Reaction

Officials at WIPP have admitted that the suspect barrels are packed with “organic kitty litter”. We were able to confirm that it was a wheat based cat litter. Wheat based cat litters are made out of wheat bran and are readily available at most stores in the US. Wheat bran is also available in a pelleted or flake form as a livestock feed. In doing some additional research into the properties of wheat type cat litters … Read entire article »

WIPP Storing Weapons Grade Plutonium In Room 7

While DOE and WIPP officials have been telling the public that the waste inside WIPP is mostly things like old gloves and radiation suits, they are failing to inform the public and the media of the much different reality going on below ground. WIPP has had the rules that dictate what can be sent there changed repeatedly. At the same time wastes from various national labs have been tweaked to fit into WIPP’s rules. What Must Be Done To Save Fukushima & The Pacific

What Must Be Done To Save Fukushima & The Pacific

Since the admission by TEPCO that the plant has been leaking for the last 2+ years and that it continues to leak, there has been much international concern. The ground water is seeping into the reactor buildings and is becoming contamination with radioactive contamination. This is something no other nuclear site has had to deal with related to contamination or a meltdown. … Read entire article »

TEPCO Hides Unit 3 Data, Who Watches TEPCO?

After months of data about water and little else, TEPCO remains mum on unit 3. Considerable progress has been made in removing the debris on the refueling floor. This reveals what could be considerable information and evidence related to the meltdown and massive blast at unit 3. The last report on unit 3 was in late May when they installed a cover over the spent fuel pool. Since then the webcam at the plant shows the back wall and most of the tangle of debris has been removed. This process will reveal the state of the damaged side of the refueling deck and the condition of the reactor well components. What could be determined in 2011 was that the south side of the building’s upper floors had collapsed and considerable steam had … Read entire article »

Black Stuff Found Around Eastern Japan May Be Fukushima Nuclear Fuel

We have reported extensively on the highly radioactive “black stuff” being found around eastern Japan, as far away as Tokyo. Citizens initially found the substance, usually concentrated in gutters and low spots. Some superficial analysis had been done on the substance, again by citizens. The government has refused to acknowledge the issue or do any publicly acknowledged testing of the substance. Marco Kalofan, an environmental engineer in the US was able to obtain a sample for detailed analysis. What was found was quite unusual. The substance isn’t a sand but an aggregate of radioactive substances, metals and rare earth materials. The materials for some reason clumped together into an aggregate rather than dispersing as tiny particles. What the detailed analysis showed was that the material may have come from inside failed fuel … Read entire article »

Examples In Leadership: Masao Yoshida

Written by fukuleaks.org/web member Peter Melzer, this article originally appeared on his blog. 山は動かない [武田 信玄]。 Last Tuesday, Jul. 9, 2013, Masao Yoshida passed away. He was 58. He had esophageal cancer. Until his illness forced him to relinquish his post late in 2011, Masao Yoshida was superintendent of Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO)Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station on Japan’s northeast coast less than 100 miles north of Tokyo. Yoshida led the power station through the most severe nuclear reactor crisis since the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. Four of six reactors lost all power as a result of the Great Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami on Mar. 11, 2011; three were operating. The other was shutdown for inspection, and the fuel had been moved to an adjacent storage pool. Despite heroic efforts of Yoshida and his crew, the three operating … Read entire article »

Where & How Fukushima Daiichi Leaks

After the new round of contaminated water leaks were admitted by TEPCO, we revisited the technical design of the buildings and where they could leak from. The buildings themselves are not as solid and contained as one would assume. Even the containment structure has hundreds of “holes” in it for pipes, cabling and the torus vents to pass through. These are sealed to prevent leaks but the penetration seal materials can melt or otherwise fail. Worker Happy11311 mentions exactly how many penetration holes are in the outer reactor building walls. Happy’s tweet, machine translated to English. If there are 590 building penetrations that are below the groundwater level, each of those provides a potential route out for contaminated water. The groundwater height is about 3000 OP as seen with the blue line … Read entire article »

US Pressured Japan In Secret To Continue MOX Program

The Mainichi has uncovered secret government documents that prove the US and deputy DOE secretary Danial Poneman put intense pressure on Japan to continue the plutonium fuel MOX program in Japan. The documents clearly show the US is pressuring Japan to continue with the MOX fuel cycle program, something the US has failed to do themselves. The US has claimed the concern to be that the plutonium would be diverted to military use. Japan has a massive amount of spent nuclear fuel, more than they could ever realistically use through reprocessing into MOX. The US stance also ignores the prospect of vitrification, a technology that encases the material in a glass substance rendering it unusable for weapons. The US is still struggling to create an operating vitrification plant at the Hanford … Read entire article »

The Marketing-Speak Of The UNSCEAR Report On Fukushima

Friday much of the media reported a declaration that there were no health impacts from Fukushima. This wasn’t even close to what was actually said in UNSCEAR’s press statements while even more lies in the details and semantics of what was said. UNSCEAR’s statements say quite a bit more if you look at their qualifying statements and what they don’t say. From the UNSCEAR Press Release: UNSCEAR Statement: “Radiation exposure following the nuclear accident at Fukushima-Daiichi did not cause any immediate health effects. It is unlikely to be able to attribute any health effects in the future among the general public and the vast majority of workers,” What it means: Immediate is key, this same rather illogical statement was repeated ad nauseum as events unraveled in 2011. Immediate heath problems typically don’t happen unless … Read entire article »

TEPCO Withholds “Black Box” Data About Fukushima Nuclear Disaster

In April of 2010 TEPCO signed a contract with high tech security company Magna BSP to provide a sophisticated video and trespass detection system  at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. This was the first installation of what was to be a series of similar installations at nuclear plants around Japan, coordinated between the government and nuclear operators. The system was installed at Fukushima Daiichi in 2010 Two TEPCO workers who were trained on the system weeks before the disaster were confirmed to have been among the Fukushima 50 who stayed at the plant during the worst of the disaster. To date TEPCO has not acknowledged the existence of the system or volunteered any of the video and data captured by the system to the public or the press. This data was never … Read entire article »

Fukushima Year 2; Part 3

This is part three of our three part series on the second year of the 3-11 disaster. In part three we look at the humanitarian issues, the environmental damage and how people are adapting since the disaster. Human Costs 300,000 remain displaced from their homes. Some from the tsunami damage, others from the nuclear disaster. The original estimate for the nuclear related evacuation was 160,000. Some are in apartments, others in tiny temporary housing units. An unused school in Saitama is still home to a group of senior citizens with nowhere else to go. Those who have taken up residence in the school will never be able to return home. All come from Futaba, very near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Futaba may not be habitable again for a generation at best. (1)(2)(3) The … Read entire article »

Fukushima Year 2; Part 2 Politics & Protest

This is part two of our three part series on the second year of the 3-11 disaster. In part two we look at the political, regulatory and social changes the disaster has caused in Japan. Political Shuffle The Japanese Diet investigation of the Fukushima disaster issued their final report in July. They concluded that the disaster was man made due to collusion between industry, regulators and the business culture that prevented people from speaking out when they saw problems. The investigation avoided blaming the earthquake for the disaster, some speculate this was to avoid raising more questions about country wide reactor safety. The investigation did admit they were unable to confirm if unit 1 was damaged by the earthquake or not due to not being able to investigate the building. Months later … Read entire article »

Fukushima Year 2; Part 1

Our review of the second year’s events surrounding the 3-11 disaster is broken into three parts. The first part covers the specific technical issues at the plant. The subsequent parts will cover the political and social changes in the last year and the third part will look at humanitarian and health issues. The second year at Fukushima Daiichi has been a year of investigations. The first year of trying to bring some control to the disaster has enabled limited inspection into the reactors with scopes and robots in the second year. Radiation levels remain high in many areas of the plant and parts of  the reactor buildings are still too dangerous for human entry. This has also been a year of exponential growth for storage at the plant. The location luckily includes … Read entire article »

WHO Fukushima Report Methodology & Crisis Management Failure

The new WHO report on Fukushima was conspicuously timed to reach the worldwide news cycles leading up to the second anniversary of the disaster. They study has had considerable press time, but all this attention failed to look deeper into the study or analyze its role in the larger disaster. The methodology used for the WHO cancer projection risk report fails in a number of ways. Instead of attempting to build a few sample detailed profiles of exposure, they used highly generalized on paper estimates then applied them to entire populations. The WHO study is not based off of real world recorded exposure data in humans. It is instead very rough on paper estimates based off of government environmental radiation readings and food testing. The WHO study also threw out all data from … Read entire article »

REVIEW: Dames & Moore Reports On Ft. Calhoun Show Foundation Risks

Two reports were done back in the 1960′s by a New York City engineering firm, Dames & Moore. The work looked at the geology of the proposed nuclear site and the appropriateness of the plant design to the chosen site. The 1967 study looked mostly at what they considered “environmental” issues but focused on soil and land properties at that point Dames & Moore felt the site to be without considerable flaws. In the 1968 report they took a considerably different opinion. The foundation related geologic inspection work found what appears to be part of a long horizontally running vein of vertical cavities and voids in the bedrock. While Dames & Moore was not able to conclusively prove the interconnectedness of the found flaws they did find matching evidence in a nearby … Read entire article »
