Where the radiation contamination was showing up frequently was in soybeans, autumn buckwheat, shiitake mushrooms grown indoors and a variety of wild vegetables and mushrooms. Autumn Buckwheat that showed contaminated ranged from .29 to 14.58 bq/kg Soybean that showed contaminated ranged from 5.55 to 21.16 bq/kg Koshiabura was the highest reading on the list at 166.3 bq/kg The entire list in English: Aizu Misato – emergency monitoring inspection on agricultural products2012 Original page in Japanese: http://www.town.aizumisato.fukushima.jp/11,11191,124.html Where is AizuMisato http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aizumisato,_Fukushima This article would not be possible without the extensive efforts of the SimplyInfo research team Join the conversation at chat.simplyinfo.org All content is copyright SimplyInfo.org. Contaminated Rice And Mushrooms From Fukushima

A farmer from Tamura City has said he wants to ignore orders to destroy crops from the region and intends to sell it himself to avoid the harvesting network set up to check crops before sale. Excessive cesium was found in greenhouse grown mushrooms from Soma, Fukushima. The mushrooms had already been sent to markets in the prefecture on Tuesday, the local farmers cooperative is recalling those sent out. Authorities are claiming the wood chips used in the greenhouse may have been the cause of the contamination but no definitive cause has been established. More Hot Spots And Contaminated Products In Japan

Another hot spot was found, this one in suburban Tokyo. The ditch near an elementary school was found to have 2.153 microsieverts per hour when someone tested above the mud in the ditch. Bagged compost used at an agricultural school in Tochigi was found to have 74 times the legal limit of radioactive contamination. Tea harvested from plantations around Tokyo was tested for contamination, 29 of the 30 teas tested were over the limit for contamination. The tea was picked in May but not tested until October. The tea had not been put out for sale yet. Radioactive Mushrooms In Chiba, Rice In Iitate-Mura

Mushrooms with 1955 bq/kg were found in Chiba. The mushrooms were grown from cultivation taken before the nuclear disaster. In Iitate-mura researchers grew rice that showed the following cesium 137 contamination: From the rice grains: 2,600 becquerels/kg From the straw: 2,200 becquerels/kg From the roots: 1,500 becquerels/kg Soil contamination: 50,000 becquerels/kg The rice grains were the highest part of the plant. This raises concerns about the early reports that rice from Fukushima is all safe since other areas had higher radiation readings. At Least The Alcohol Is Safe, Japan Agency To Test Beer, Saki And Wine

The National Tax Agency said it will be testing the finished product and also water going into brewing beer, sake and wine in Japan. The testing will happen for any facility within 150km of the nuclear plant. They will also randomly test products from facilities outside the 150km zone. The tax agency said the ingredients such as grains for beer will have already been tested. All of this testing is not to report any radiation at all in products but to look for those over the government safety limits. This should help a highly radioactive product from coming to market, but would not prevent low contamination products. The tax agency said it would put results of testing on their website but did not mention if they will show actual test … Read entire article »

Over Limit Rice Found In Fukushima

After early reports that rice from Fukushima was “clean” and not contaminated with radiation, officials are now finding rice over the 500 bq/kg limit. Rice from Nihonmatsu showed over the limit, officials are considering a ban on rice from the region. Much of the rice from the region has already shipped after passing tests, hopefully this doesn’t become another disaster like beef was earlier in the summer. Deer In Tochigi Contaminated With Radiation

Wild deer found in Tochigi, south west of Fukushima prefecture tested positive for radiation contamination. The deer were found to have 590 to 2037 becquerels per kilogram in their meat. A quick map estimate shows this location to be over 150km away from the plant and closer to Tokyo than to the plant. If deer this far away are testing significantly over the limit what does this say about farm animal contamination? Or over all contamination outside of the evacuation zone? CRIIRAD Gives Workshop To Train Citizens In Radiation Testing

French NGO CRIIRAD presented a workshop in Yokohama to show interested citizens how to test food for radiation contamination. Children Nationwide shared images on their Facebook page and announced they are attempting to set up their own lab in Yokohama. The equipment needed is quite expensive, the local group will commence fundraising soon to buy their own equipment. As soon as we hear about that effort starting we will share the fundraising information. Rice Hay Contamination Doesn’t Add Up

Ex-SKF muses about the rice hay contamination and how it doesn’t quite add up. The story of the hay all being outside in March does seem questionable. Over winter, unprotected it would rot.  There were also reports of some cows closer to the plant that became contaminated while in barns who were not fed outside hay. Cesium doesn’t clear the body as quickly as iodine clears from milk due to the short half life. Cesium has a biological half life of 70 days but that doesn’t mean it is all gone. New Contamination Found In Food and Environment

Contaminated pool water in Fukushima schools is creating yet another problem to solve. Some school pools were found to have contamination in the water. But what to do with the water? Trying to decontaminate the water is a challenge and they can’t drain out the water into fields, streams or storm drains that drain into the water ways or environment. That would just move the contamination around and cause a new problem.  This article would not be possible without the extensive efforts of the SimplyInfo research team Join the conversation at chat.simplyinfo.org All content is copyright SimplyInfo.org.
