23 Tbq Water Leak At Fukushima Caused By Multiple Human Errors

H6tankleak2014100 tons of water leaked from a contaminated water tank at Fukushima Daiichi after workers incorrectly aligned valves. They then ignored the alarm that alerted them to a tank that was not supposed to be filling, had overfilled. After the tank spilled out over the top flange the water then leaked out through a failure in the water weir that is supposed to catch any leaks. This water is highly radioactive water left over from the reverse osmosis filtration system. Ex SKF took the total volume of water times the recorded contamination rates per liter to establish the leak total of 23 terabequerels. This is a considerable release to the environment.

TEPCO insists it hasn’t leaked to the sea through drainage canals. This water will eventually reach the sea as groundwater at the plant eventually flows out to sea. This leak was made possible by 3 human errors. Incorrect valve alignment, ignoring an alarm and a failed containment device. The contamination levels were primarily strontium 90 and are 7.6 million times higher than the legal release limit.
