Fukushima Is Here! Contamination Found Off Vancouver Coast

thumb_2_fukushima-is-hereScientists from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography have found levels of cesium in sea water off the Vancouver Canada coast that can be attributed to the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The levels are low, but the presence of cesium 134 confirms the contamination to be from Fukushima Daiichi. They cited the levels as such:
less than one becquerel per cubic metre of water

Recent readings off the US coast did not find traces of cesium 134 in their samples. 2013 samples taken from the Pacific did find cesium 134 north of Hawaii. While the recent readings are not high, the issue is still causing concern among scientists because there is a wide variety of estimates for how high the concentration levels could eventually go. This makes ongoing sea testing critical in understanding what will happen over time in the Pacific. The first detection off the Vancouver coast is assumed to be an outcome of the current flow across the Pacific.
