Muon Detectors To Be Installed At Fukushima Daiichi Next Year

TEPCO and contractor Toshiba plan to install muon detectors next year at Fukushima Daiichi. This technology will allow scientists to “image” the melted reactor fuel and hopefully identify the location of the fuel. The concept has been discussed since 2012 when Los Alamos national lab suggested the project to TEPCO. The lead researcher was hired by Toshiba’s research division and has been working on the concept in Japan.

A test run on a small research reactor proved that the concept could work. One concern has been levels of high radiation near the muon detectors that could interfere with the readings and how to safely place the detectors.
