Fukushima Unit 3 Spent Fuel Pool Debris Removal Progress

TEPCO has progressed on removing debris from the unit 3 spent fuel pool. The current work is to dismantle the fuel handling crane piece by piece and remove it from the pool. The trolley, main hoist and roof trussing that was above the crane have already been removed. Once the last of the fuel handling crane is removed work will begin to remove debris from the cask handling area of the pool. Cask area debris removal is expected to take til July of this year. There is not a plan outlined for how they will remove the remaining debris down among the fuel racks or how long that will take.

Removal of the fuel crane is critical to determining the damage to the spent fuel and towards finally covering unit 3 with a protective cover.

u3_reactorwellwall_2014Work is ongoing to install a reactor well wall on top of unit 3. High radiation levels coming from the reactor well have required shielding to be installed to deal with this problem.
