Metropolis Uranium Leak Worse Than Initially Admitted

The leak has now been admitted to have been worse than initially claimed. A new set of reports via the NRC showed that the event was worse and may have traveled off site. NEIS also documents a number of major failures in public safety at the plant that came into play. The facility does not have any designated evacuation zone around the plant in the event of a radioactive release. There are apparently not enough monitoring stations to detect releases from the plant.

A combination of the plant operating with replacement workers during a union worker strike, a systemic lack of public safety and a passive oversight system by the NRC created a situation that may have exposed the public. It also shows the considerable lack of public safety around non reactor nuclear facilities.
