TEPCO has again been receiving growing criticism over their handling of contaminated water at the plant.
The first leak, from a series of drainage canals that route from up on the hill where the tank farms reside down to the port has been under increased scrutiny by Japan’s NRA. It appears that heightened oversight of this first leak may have led to the admission of the second leak where contaminated water from unit 2’s roofs was leaking out to sea. This second link saw significantly contaminated water leaking directly to the sea.
Two recent news stories by NHK first showed TEPCO planned to do nothing about this second leak. A follow up report soon after, TEPCO said they would attempt to reroute the drainage canal that went out to sea into the port. This may only marginally improve the situation as the port still exchanges water with the sea. TEPCO has a silt fence curtain and a newer curtain made out of materials that could absorb some radioactive substances. The effectiveness of either measure has not been publicly documented.
This new set of leaks has caused considerable public outcry. Last year PM Abe told the International Olympic Committee that leaks at Fukushima Daiichi were under control and the contaminated water problem would soon be solved, declaring it a non issue for hosting the 2020 Olympics.
