Two New Leaks At Fukushima Daiichi

Two new leaks happened at Fukushima Daiichi recently. Both were contained within the buildings where they happened.

The first was a leak within one of the ALPS filtration buildings. A flange on a pipe containing highly radioactive water began to leak. Tightening of the bolts on the flange solved the leak. TEPCO states that the small amount of water remained within the spill containment weir.

A pipe in the new incinerator building leaked. This seemed unusual since the system had just completed a hot test run. Apparently contractors working in the building cut through the pipe. When the system was restarted for full operation the pipe leaked. This pipe was part of a cesium adsorption device. Contaminated water remained within the spill containment weir.

Both of these failures show how even minor maintenance and work failures can cause contaminated water spills. Below are photos from the incinerator leak.
