Edano As METI Minister May Force Change

Edano’s new role as head of METI could drastically shake up the office tasked with both regulating nuclear power companies and economic development. He has expressed concern over the way power companies have been  calculating their rates for the past ten years, saying they are overestimating their costs and that should change. He also vowed that TEPCO and their shareholders should bear the costs of the Fukushima disaster rather than the taxpayers.

His experience dealing  with TEPCO, METI and the nuclear industry appears to have given him a healthy skepticism of the status quo. This combined with Edano’s commitment to move Japan away from nuclear power could spell significant change.
