Atomic Spiders In Iitate

A retired professor in Japan collected some spiders (Nephila clavata specifically) from Iitate. He put the spiders in a germanium detector and his findings showed high levels of cesium 137 and cesium 134 so the spiders were bio-accumulating radiation from the other insects they eat. He also found that they had 1000x the radioactive silver (Ag-110m) found in the environment for the area.

Why the spiders are concentrating the radioactive silver at such an alarming rate is not clear. The professor things this is the first such finding ever.

Ex-SKF has more details and the test results in English here.
