Black Stuff Found Around Eastern Japan May Be Fukushima Nuclear Fuel

We have reported extensively on the highly radioactive “black stuff” being found around eastern Japan, as far away as Tokyo. Citizens initially found the substance, usually concentrated in gutters and low spots. Some superficial analysis had been done on the substance, again by citizens. The government has refused to acknowledge the issue or do any publicly acknowledged testing of the substance. Marco Kalofan, an environmental engineer in the US was able to obtain a sample for detailed analysis. What was found was quite unusual. The substance isn’t a sand but an aggregate of radioactive substances, metals and rare earth materials. The materials for some reason clumped together into an aggregate rather than dispersing as tiny particles. What the detailed analysis showed was that the material may have come from inside failed fuel … Read entire article »

New Discoveries In The Fukushima “Black Stuff” Mystery

Marco Kaltofan announced last week some new understanding of the strange radioactive black sand being found in Japan. The substance has been found in parking lots and street gutters in some far flung areas including Minamisoma, Fukushima City, Tokyo and various locations in and around the evacuation zone. The substance has an intense radiation reading in all instances if its discovery but details of exactly what it is has been more elusive. Marco was able to obtain a small sample from just outside the evacuation zone in Namie. The black sand like substance was tested using NaI-well gamma spectrometry. It was found to not contain any plant matter and was made up of mineral substances. Additional testing was done using “scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis.”. The substance measured 1.5 MBq per … Read entire article »

Black Stuff Mystery Gets Stranger, Is Magnetic, We Look Into What It Is

The ongoing mystery of the black stuff gets another twist. Someone in Minamisoma took a sample and separated it with a sieve. The larger pieces had about 50 uSv while the fine matter had 100 uSv. The fine matter is also slightly magnetic. This raised the obvious question of what could it be to be radioactive and magnetic. This is the detector used in the video. The video here. We looked at a number of possible substances. Some are paramagnetic. This type can be influenced by heavy magnets under certain conditions but probably not the manner seen in the video. A household magnet generally can’t attract a paramagnetic substance. Our team has been researching the past 2 days trying to determine potential sources for the substance and have run through a long list of possibilities. We also … Read entire article »

The Plague Of The Black Stuff

More reports of mystery black stuff are showing up around Japan. It was initially found in Minamisoma in some concerning levels. We speculated it could be a substance called “tuff” made from volcanic rock and used as a winter road treatment. Some of it also looks slightly similar to a road patch substance used on asphalt roads in the US. Some of the newer images look a bit different than the original ones from Minamisoma. The found substances are testing high in radiation. They could be accumulations of road runoff or other concentrating of dirt, debris, smoke residue etc. that now read high in radiation like gutter residue has in the past. The “black stuff” has been found as far away as Soma and Tokyo. While it is obvious it is … Read entire article »

Researchers Confirm “Black Substance” Is Fukushima Reactor Fuel

Researchers Confirm “Black Substance” Is Fukushima Reactor Fuel

In a peer reviewed paper released this week by the journal Environmental Science & Technology, a Japanese team of researchers has concluded that portions of the “black substance” found in Japan is nuclear fuel fragments from Fukushima Daiichi. Discoveries of the black residue along roadsides in and near the evacuation zone have been going on since at least 2011. Most were initially found by local citizens doing radiation monitoring. Some of these black substance sightings have … Read entire article »

Mystery High Radiation Black Substance In Minamisoma, Some Theories

Locals have been finding a crushed black substance scattered mostly on roads in Minamisoma. It has very high radiation levels. The radiation level in one of these spots was 295 uSv/h. This translates to 2.8 Sv/year of exposure. This is high enough to cause acute radiation sickness symptoms after 6 months of consistent exposure. Exactly what this high radiation “stuff” being found on the roads is the big question. How it got there and what it is plays a big part in eradicating the risk. These images show the black substance on the road and a comparison photo of black volcanic rock. The two substances show a great resemblance. The user that posted the image of the black stuff has taken it down as of 3.22.2012 The lava rock material itself referred to … Read entire article »

New Meltdown Byproduct Found Far From Fukushima Daiichi

New Meltdown Byproduct Found Far From Fukushima Daiichi

Another type of material has been found by researchers that is tied to the meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi. We have reported extensively over the years on the finding of “black stuff” around mainland Japan. This is a highly radioactive black sand like material that had gathered in gutters and roads as far away as Tokyo. Analysis of materials of that type has linked them to the meltdowns inside the reactors at Fukushima Daiichi. This new … Read entire article »

Fukushima Year 2; Part 3

This is part three of our three part series on the second year of the 3-11 disaster. In part three we look at the humanitarian issues, the environmental damage and how people are adapting since the disaster. Human Costs 300,000 remain displaced from their homes. Some from the tsunami damage, others from the nuclear disaster. The original estimate for the nuclear related evacuation was 160,000. Some are in apartments, others in tiny temporary housing units. An unused school in Saitama is still home to a group of senior citizens with nowhere else to go. Those who have taken up residence in the school will never be able to return home. All come from Futaba, very near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Futaba may not be habitable again for a generation at best. (1)(2)(3) The … Read entire article »

Fukushima 2012; Year In Review

2012 brought considerable progress in attempts to understand the disaster at Daiichi. We saw the first grainy peek into unit 2′s containment. By the end of the year vastly improved scope cameras were able to show more detail of the condition of containment at units 1 and 2. Unit 3 has still remained a challenge with limited work conducted there. TEPCO used an increasingly sophisticated series of robots in 2012 with mixed success. They were able to investigate portions of the torus rooms of units 1 – 3. They also investigated TIPS rooms of each unit and the refueling floor of unit 2. Containment and torus room findings at each unit were greatly mixed with each unit having a unique set of visual evidence. Unit 1 developed a hydrogen pocket in … Read entire article »

NHK Admits Fukushima Daiichi Ejected Fuel After Multiple Studies Document It

A rough translation of the NHK article tells something almost unbelievable to see admitted by the state news agency. “It is a result, in addition to the radioactive cesium, zirconium material of the fuel rods and uranium, and iron of the material of the pressure vessel, material that matches the structure of the nuclear reactor and nuclear fuel has been detected.” NHK has been one of the less critical news sources in Japan, frequently downplaying or omitting … Read entire article »

Fuku Haiku

For a while now, the non-tech board has been given to bouts of humor, disbelief, dark humor, and sometimes sequential facepalms as the FukuNuku idiocy has continued.  Ms in La has been gathering some of the day’s more notable phrases (on an infrequent and informal basis) and making these FukuHiakus from them. FUKU HAIKU 6/28/2011 I feel like I am in the tropics tonight! Are we getting visited by the gardeners? AHHHHHH!!!!! NOOOO!!!!! Not to worry. They have a tent over them a 2,000-foot-long rubber berm That’s the Onion right? Veenie Facebook NOW! Not a chance in hell I will wear that Ohhh ..and…..BITE ME the country’s nuclear watchdog said He always says”bite me” You never really hear “OMG, here comes a forest fire! Quick! In the tent!” He always cleans his plate Ok kids now ask your parents to support nuclear power Spent fuel is … Read entire article »
