Strontium 90 Readings From Citizen Collected Fukushima Samples

Some Fukushima contamination samples collected by citizens in Japan have been tested for strontium 90. Marco Kaltofan from the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute tested two existing samples, one being an air filter and the other a sample of black sand found near the evacuation zone. The results were posted to Safecast’s public email list. “The detection limits are higher than I would like, at about 10 Bq/g.  Even so, I got some good results for some of my existing samples.  The sample of black sand from Namie had been reported last year at 1530 Bq/g of radiocesium.  The 90Sr level for this sample was 348 Bq/g.  An air filter sample taken in June 2011 in Fukushima City was 2792 Bq/filter radiocesium, and 668 Bq/filter 90Sr.  These were … Read entire article »

44.9 Tbq Contamination Released to Sea & Air In Last 2 Years At Fukushima Daiichi

44.9 Tbq Contamination Released to Sea & Air In Last 2 Years At Fukushima Daiichi

The ongoing releases at Fukushima Daiichi are beginning to add up. Between September 2011 and September 2013 roughly 44.9 terabecquerels of radioactive contamination were released to the sea and the air from Fukushima Daiichi. This may be an underestimate since these numbers do not include all types isotopes or types of radiation. This does not include the initial releases from the plant during the worst of the disaster. The number was estimated by taking the … Read entire article »

Radiation Levels In Air Rising At Fukushima Daiichi

NHK is reporting after the most recent TEPCO press conference that radiation levels are rising around Fukushima Daiichi. This seems to indicate a change from the reporting earlier in the day. The initial reports cited the dust monitor near the anti-seismic building as having gone off. The new report from NHK hints there may be a wider problem now at the plant. From NHK: “TEPCO officials say they have detected radioactive substances above the alert level in air around the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.” We are working on confirming this further. If this is the case it indicates something at the plant has changed. Workers have been instructed to wear full protective masks in all areas of the plant since the dust monitor went off this morning. Update: TEPCO released a press … Read entire article »

Fukushima School Swimming Pools As High As 100,000 bq/kg

School swimming pools in Fukushima have been found to have some with over 100,000 bq/kg, concentrated in mud in the pools. A pool in Fukushima City registered 119,461 bq/kg. from the mud at the bottom of the pool. One in Minamisoma had 8,468 bq/kg. Both pools had not been cleaned out since the March 2011 disaster. Asahi Shimbun mentions some schools cleaned their pools early on but dumped the contaminated water and silt back into the environment. This would contribute to the environmental contamination and can make its way into rivers and streams. The central government is responsible for aiding the clean up due to the high levels but so far have not done anything to clean up the pools. The pools are yet another example of places where radiation can hyper concentrate and … Read entire article »

Oddities Found Near Unit 5 Fukushima Daiichi

TEPCO’s air testing near each reactor unit produced an interesting situation. The readings were taken at the same locations at each reactor yet unit 5′s levels are generally higher or as high as the levels near units 1-4. Considering units 5 and 6 didn’t have meltdowns and sit a considerable distance away from units 1-4 these readings do not make sense. TEPCO provides no explanation. The cesium 134 readings were notably higher than the units that suffered meltdowns. The scaling factor and density limits used are the same for all units. High Levels Of Contamination Found Outside Evacuation Zone

MEXT has released more contamination level data that shows considerably high levels outside the 20km evacuation zone, mostly concentrated in a north west path. As data has been coming out recently the north west path has shown to have taken considerable fallout over the last six months. There were also soil samples taken, these showed levels outside the evacuation zone in 66 locations exceeded the evacuation threshold used in Chernobyl. Okuma is 30km from the plant and showed millions of becquerels on the soil sample tests. Namie and Iitate were showing high levels on the MEXT sampling information, both are outside the evacuation zone. Some of this area to the north and west had been evacuated, but there are still people in this northwest stretch that the government has not done anything … Read entire article »

MEXT Radiation Testing Results For September 1st

MEXT has new radiation testing results out. They tested drinking water and various monitoring posts for radiation. All of their drinking water tests came up clean but they excluded Fukushima and Ibaraki. An independent citizen testing to confirm these results would be valuable. Futuba shows consistent higher levels of radiation. The radiation testing by prefecture showed widespread contamination. Fukushima Daiichi Leaking 1 Billion Becquerels Per Hour

According to a news report by NHK today Fukushima Daiichi has lowered the emissions from the damaged plant. Even with the lowered rate, about 1 billion becquerels per hour of radiation are being released from the nuclear power plant. Building A Citizen Testing System In Japan

What is currently happening in Japan may sound familiar to many in Germany. After Chernobyl exploded, governments were intent on downplaying the situation. One German politician even erroneously suggested boiling milk would remove radioactive contamination. Obviously that is not true but illustrates the same kind of disconnect that is frustrating consumers in Japan today.   Comprehensive food testing in Germany was not coming together so the citizens took it upon themselves to do so without government help. Joint US & Japanese Study Shows Radiation Releases Doubled Estimates

A joint survey by the US Dept. of Energy and Japan’s METI showed that the radioactive releases from Fukushima were double the initial estimates. Areas near Iitate and Namie now exceed the radiation level of evacuated areas at Chernobyl. These areas in Japan are currently outside of the evacuation zone.
