Fukushima And North Anna Show Some Similar Quake Damage

Images of Fukushima Daiichi show some of the movement and damage around the plant. Pipe supports that shifted and concrete falling away. These damage points at North Anna were dismissed as nothing by Dominion Energy at the recent NRC meeting, citing visual inspections as sufficient. NRC inspectors brought up concerns about internal concrete cracking or cracks in the bolts inside the concrete. Many thanks to Peter for finding this issue and images. Recent Quake May Prevent 3rd Reactor From Being Built At North Anna

The Blue Ridge Defense League filed a request with the Atomic Safety Licensing Board asking them to block a potential new reactor at North Anna in Virginia. The group cited the recent quake as grounds for preventing the new reactor. The nuclear station sits directly over a fault line. Dominion power is claiming that the new plant will have higher seismic standards as reason the region should risk housing a nuclear reactor on a fault line. Dominion was fined in the 1970′s for falsifying information to cover up the fault line under units 1 and 2. The ASLB has granted the group’s request to intervene in the licensing process. NRC Requests Long List Of Technical Testing And Analysis

After the September 8th short notice NRC meeting, the NRC has sent a response to the North Anna nuclear plant asking them for a long list of technical analysis of their reactors. While the list is comprehensive it is a good overview of all the critical systems and reactor core contents that Dominion Energy failed to even consider in their plant review. Dominion was ready to restart the plants without any serious review of the condition of the inside of the reactors, the control rods or the fuel. Failure in these items could result in inability to control the reactor or other dangerous conditions. The entire NRC letter below, original was sent out through the NRC email system to the public.   UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555·0001 September 14, … Read entire article »

NRC Public Meeting On North Anna Nuclear Plant Today

The NRC claimed yesterday on their blog that the situation at North Anna is so unique they wanted to have the meeting as soon as possible and open to the public. No hints from the NRC or Dominion if this is good news or bad news regarding the plants ability to continue to run. The New York Times ran an article detailing the inspection work that is ongoing. The NRC did admit to USA Today that the containment structure took .26g, 26% the force of gravity but it is designed to withstand only .12g or 12%. Reuters reports that the meeting will be to discuss the analysis of the seismic findings. Dominion continues to tell the media the plant is safe even though cracks were found in the containment, fuel storage … Read entire article »

Cracks Found In North Anna Nuclear Plant Containment

Cracks were found in the containment building of the North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia. Dominion Energy is attempting to downplay these cracks. No additional detail has been released by the NRC yet. North Anna is built over a fault line that was found and suppressed by the power station owners during construction. The licensing and operating extension at North Anna have been highly controversial since the 1970′s due to this known problem. Dominion also stated today they they may not repair the upright fuel storage casks that moved 4.5 inches off their mounts during the quake. No reason was given why the company would chose not to reseat their fuel storage casks. US Quake Revealed Widespread Problems And Internal NRC Concerns At Nuclear Plants

The NRC has admitted that 27 nuclear power plants may need upgrades to make them better able to handle earthquakes. North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia is on that list. The review was kicked off by the Great East Earthquake and Fukushima disaster in Japan. While the NRC is putting on an “everything is safe” face for the public, the communication inside showed something quite different. The AP obtained NRC emails discussing the current state of safety at some of the US reactors. The NRC data shows N. Anna to be 38% more likely to suffer core damage from a quake. An augmented inspection team was sent out last week something done when the risk of reactor core damage rises by 100. Only two of the US’s reactors are required to … Read entire article »

North Anna Nuclear Plant Quake May Have Been Beyond Safety Design

The North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia experienced a power loss after an earthquake hit the eastern US. A number of things have caused concern about the North Anna plant including statements that the earthquake did not trip the reactors into automatic shutdown. The power plants seismic monitoring equipment was sent off to the manufacturer for analysis. The initial and mid-term analysis both state that the quake was beyond the design basis for the plant. “Following the event, seismic data was retrieved from the installed monitoring system and shipped to the vendor to determine the response spectrum for the event. On August 26, 2011 at 1340 hours, initial reviews of the data determined that the seismic activity potentially exceeded the Design Basis Earthquake magnitude value above 5 Hz.” No word yet if the … Read entire article »

North Anna Nuclear Plant, More Concerns About the Dam and Artificial Lake

RT TV picked up our story about the fault line concerns at the North Anna nuclear plant. Paul Gunter from Beyond Nuclear included new information that there are also concerns about the dam stability. North Anna’s sole source of cooling water is an artificial lake held back by a nearby dam. That dam was rated a “D-” by the American Association of Civil Engineers. Local media in Virginia also identified that since the earthquake the water level in Lake Anna dropped 22 inches (55.9cm). So far no reason has been given for the sudden water drop. VIDEO: Inside North Anna Nuclear Station

CNN did a piece on the North Anna nuclear station yesterday. According to the plant manager’s statements the earthquake did not trip the reactors. The plant staff were attempting a manual shutdown when the power loss tripped the SCRAM automatic shutdown system. The question remains unanswered why the movement from the earthquake did not trip an automatic seismic system. The fact that the plant sits on a fault line was also not mentioned in the piece. NRC Colluded To Cover Up Fault Under North Anna Reactors

Earlier this week the North Anna nuclear plant lost offsite power and an emergency generator when a 5.8 earthquake hit the region. Our research team has uncovered the disturbing past of North Anna that creates a potential danger to the region even today. North Anna is 70 miles (112 km) from the US capitol, Washington DC. The North Anna nuclear plant also sits directly on top of a fault line. The nuclear plant includes a man made dam and a 13,000 acre lake to provide cooling water to the reactors. The extent of the faulting under the lake and dam was not known in the 1970’s. North Anna Nuclear Plant Has Critical Safety Failures

Yesterday’s 5.8 earthquake that shook the eastern US and the near miss at the North Anna nuclear power plant has caused many to stop and look at the true safety situation in the US. Soon after the Fukushima disaster the US government and the NRC proclaimed that US reactors were safe, touting a “superior safety system”.  What we are quickly finding out is the US has a myth of superior safety rather than a safe system. This is all on the heels of months of anxiety as Ft. Calhoun nuclear station sat surrounded by water. Ft. Calhoun initially had no formal flood plan until the NRC forced them to develop one in 2010. Even then the plan involved sand bags and lots of hope. The North Anna nuclear plant has a seismic … Read entire article »
