Unit 1 Torus Inspection Review

New work done around February 21 to 22 has been posted by TEPCO and confirmed by workers. The newest work was done at a new location about 17 meters from the previous torus inspection location. (ignore the blue route lines, those are from a previous use of the floorplan diagram at another unit.) The video was considerably different than what was seen on the previous torus inspection. The newest inspection video can be found here on our Youtube channel Our work and data from the previous torus inspection back in June 2012 can be found here. We also processed the new inspection video into individual images that can be found on our Flickr page. Two TEPCO handouts from the newest torus inspection: U1_torusday2_handouts_130222_05-e U1_torusday1_handouts_130220_02-e Workers drilled a large hole into the concrete floor in the north west corner of the … Read entire article »

Unit 1 Refueling Floor Video & Exclusive New Photos

TEPCO’s lightbulb balloon inspection of the refueling floor did result in some interesting findings. The overhead crane was found to be significantly damaged and partially resting on the refueling crane. This may complicate safe removal of the cranes and debris from unit 1. The power of the hydrogen blast itself is evident in some of the findings on the video. Videos at the end of the article.   Overhead crane, broken open above the refueling crane. Another view of the overhead crane. W hat appears to be the other portion of the overhead crane on the refueling deck. A thick steel beam pulled apart and split in half shows the massive force of the hydrogen explosion at unit 1. This heavy steel I-beam curved during the explosion. This blue object appears to be some sort of small … Read entire article »

Unit 4 Spent Fuel Pool Video: Enhanced Images

TEPCO took video of the interior of unit 4′s spent fuel pool. Video can be found here and here. Some things our research team noted: There is significant particulate matter or some sort of algae or organism in the water. A substance seems to be coating the tops of the fuel assemblies that was not there on the previous videos of the pool. The substance has grown between the tops of fuel rods and appears to have a brown-green tinge. There have been incidents of algae growing in extreme conditions. Algae and bacteria are a known problem for spent fuel pools and storage. The reactor well at Three Mile Island was found to be so inundated with algae, mold and bacteria even with the lethal radiation levels, that it hindered clean up by 1986. Enhanced images from 4′s spent fuel … Read entire article »

Unit 3 Torus Inspection Video And New Images And Analysis

TEPCO has released a video of the 8 minute trip into unit 3. We have some enhanced still images from the video. Some noted information that has come out of the video: The torus room door is bowed out both across the width and height of the door as if it either experienced considerable pressure or was struck by something. Workers could not open the door even with attempts to kick it open. Structures between the air lock door and the torus door had strike damage and large pieces of debris. What looks like a pipe that has been moved about a foot away from original location. Unit 3 video on YouTube. Unit 2 video forthcoming. Confusion Over Unit 2 Quince Photo

There was some concern and confusion that TEPCO was possibly hiding something in a still photo they released. First was the yellow boxes that appear over the video screen as it scrambles to re-render the image.  As it re-renders it duplicates a frame over two positions. TEPCO decided to release this screen shot as a press photo. Why would they do that? Probably the same reason they have been releasing images that give less information than others for months. Either rushing to get information out or just plain sloppiness. Are the hiding something with the repeated image shot? Probably not. There is a very clear shot of that area right before Quince re-renders. Quince 1 and 2 do this yellow panel image reshuffle when they encounter signal problems. In the second video … Read entire article »

New Flyover Video Of Fukushima Daiichi

This new video released by NHK was taken by the first civilian helicopter to fly over Fukushima Daiichi since the disaster. They show some new views of unit 4 and workers walking along the overhead crane. A view of the work being done to dump cement over the floor of the lagoon and a good view of the tank farm. The quality is limited but it does give a good idea where things are located and some views we don’t normally get from land based shots. Thanks to Majj for finding this! Workers Inspect Inside Unit 1

Video has been released of the an extended entry into unit 1 on October 18th. Previously, workers had expressed concerns about high radiation levels inside the building. Radiation readings as high as 4 sVh were found in areas of the building making work even more high risk. Workers inspected the isolation condenser and an area on the floor(s) below. Details about the isolation condenser provided by Dean at the end of the article. The drawing to the left is from Oyster Creek NPP. This unit is very similar to unit 1 at Fukushima Daiichi. The isolation condenser tanks are highlighted in red. The area labeled “8A” is the rough vicinity of the last part of the video where you can see the outside of the containment bulb concrete. After the video below … Read entire article »

New Images And Video Inside Units 2 And 3

TEPCO released two crane videos. One viewing in the hole of unit 2 and the other some views of the top of unit 3. The images of unit 3 show what looks like at least a portion of the reactor well concrete plug still in place adjacent to the equipment pool. There is also a rust colored stain on the concrete where a steam path has been. We have found rust stained areas in other places where highly radioactive steam or water are leaking in large quantities. Ian Goddard has an illustration showing that this may be due to cesium rather than iron oxide. Unit 2 images show the wall panel that blew out was a removable panel. The bracket appears to be what the wall panel connected to. There … Read entire article »

Fukushima As History; Nothing Is Ever Really Gone From The Internet

The Spectrum IEEE website caused quite a stir when they rescued the blog of a Fukushima worker that was mysteriously taken down. The worker made videos and gave great insight into the work going on at the plant and how robotics are being used. It is very useful and interesting information and not some sort of public relations nightmare. So the abrupt removal caused concern in the online community. Proving nothing is ever really gone from the internet, Spectrum IEEE shows how they found and retrieved the videos and blog pages using some simple online tools. Google cache still shows many of the pages of the blog.  This has been an ongoing concern and problem as the disaster evolved. People found information from various official sources was moved, altered or deleted. … Read entire article »

TEPCO’s Plan To Extract Melted Reactor Fuel
